Robert Lobetta & Michael Polsinelli: Creative Mentoring and Collaboration

This Classic MASTERS Podcast is all about mentoring, as hairdressing industry legend Robert Lobetta shares interview time with his then-protege, Michael Polsinelli.

Artist, photographer, and hair artist Robert Lobetta is known for his emotional power and raw energy, as well as being contemporary in thought yet remaining romantic at heart. It all began in 1973, when he apprenticed with Ricci Burns in London. It was there, as Burns’ senior stylist and art director, that avant-garde hair designs became Robert’s signature. Art took center stage when he became Creative Director for the famous Michaeljohn Salon, also in London, and went global in 1985 when he began working with Geri Cusenza of Sebastian International. In 1997, Robert became Creative Director of Sebastian and turned his artist’s eye to products and recreating the image of the company. A student, hairdresser, salon owner, product creator, painter, artist, photographer, and creative leader, Robert has been honored on numerous occasions all over the world.

Michael Polsinelli was born with the gift to create artistic designs. After spending his youth watching his parents’ busy salon thrive, he became an apprentice hairdresser there. Twenty years later, he brought a new level of artistic expression and commitment to elevating hair artistry. In 1997, Michael became a Sebastian Design Artist and began teaching educational seminars in both Canada and North America. His talent was spotted by Robert Lobetta, who promoted Michael to Artistic Director. Their collaboration produced noteworthy collections, photographic images, and extravagant gala shows.

Interviewed by Winn Claybaugh, Robert shares his wisdom on creative mentoring and collaboration. This wide-ranging conversation covers everything from what Robert describes as “hoping for the wonderful disaster” that leads to something new and good, to finding and working with a mentor or mentee, and the importance of growth to keep any business relevant in the face of change.
